Abstract

It is well known that Luzi regarded the relationship between words and reality as crucial: the «name of the thing» is the secret of any poet. Even in the choice of names in the caracters of his plays Luzi did not act haphazardly. This article inquires the historical ad symbolic meanig of powerful ad obscure characters such Sinesio ad Ipazia, Irene, Anna and Alba; in Hystrio the names of Giulia and Berek carry an evident historical responsability. As Luzi wrote: «Words are not arbitrary or conventional signs, yet are secret identifications, the recognizing of Things, a birth by Thought». To have a name for Luzi means to be born again.
