Abstract

The presence of ciphered names and enigma signatures in medieval texts within the Italian and romance areas has represented a subject of specific critical and philological interest mainly in the last two centuries, with main reference to the author’s name. The examples that follow, belonging to Old French narrative and to the pre-Dantesque Italian lyric, have provided persevering experts with hints about the relationship between the culture of anonymity and the nascent author’s subjectivity, by stimulating attributive hypotheses as well as allowing a more complex view of the controversial and changeable relationship between the author and his work.
