Abstract
How are characters’ names and surnames chosen in Italian TV fiction? The essay takes into account three among the most popular series of the last few years – I Cesaroni, Don Matteo, and Un medico in famiglia – and examines the techniques used by directors, authors and screenplayers, especially on the basis of interviews to some of these authors. A varied picture emerges and acknowledgements to friends and acquaintances prevail, with anthroponyms scarcely related to the stories and the places where the events occur. There are some curiosities though, and rare situations where names become speaking protagonists of the action.
